The Imperial Uncle

by Da Feng Gua Guo

The Imperial Uncle is the second novel I bound in this bamboo-strip spine style, which is a technique based on a combination of a) bamboo scrolls, b) the crisscross (secret Belgian) binding, and c) Chinese stab bindings. The cover is made first, and then the pages are sewn to the strings that are holding the spine together. Here's a video I made of how the cover is built.

I wanted a very classy, elegant look for this book, and once I had picked out a Goudy font for both the body text (Goudy Bookletter 1911) and the initials (Goudy Initialen), I decided to just run with that and use some of Goudy's ornaments and page number styling as well. The circular floral motif on the title page existed in scanned but not vectorized form, so that needed a little cleanup.

The box for the two volumes is covered in the same cloth as the book covers, and decorated with a satin cord tied with decorative knotwork.

Please note that this is a personal binding made for my own use and enjoyment and no money has been made from this project.
